Today's topic is twofold. First a book reveiw. The book is "In The Blood" by Rick Reed. Admittedly I love vampire stories to begin with so I may be biased, however, I think this is a delightful book. It brings to mind the type of character analysis and attention to detail found in Anne Rice's various psychological thriller type novels. I loved them and I love this one.
The story is pretty simple. Three vampires, and a look at their lifes, pass and present. In addition, there is another thread, which consists of a down and out artist and her daily and nightly life. The way the two halves come together is the genious of the story. Read it, especially if you have any interest in vampire stories, but even if you dont you may find a good that you enjoy anyway. :)
The other part of the blog is my question of when will I ever learn. On occasion I get the idea that maybe I can become something of a nexus point for intelluectual discussion of this or that topic. Examples are my review of Michael Crickton's State of Fear. Wow, I thought, a wonderful opportunity to make my mark by hosting a good discussion of the issues, or not, of global warning and how we, as ordinary people, can get enought information to make wise choices. I even sent out emails to those that I thought would be interested in such a discussion (because of their scholarly approach or whatever) and only one person commented...period. The same has happened a couple other times when I thought I could get a good discussion going...no, or very little, response.
I dont know why. Maybe people are busy, or consider the topic too controversial. I would hate to have to admit that maybe I am just not scholarly enought or good enought a writer to pull people in. So I WONT admit that, even if it might be true. However, I "give up" at least for the time being.
What do I mean by give up? I mean that I am going to try and remember (once again I say this) about what I want to blog about...what is of interest to ME. Would I still blog about State of Fear? Yes!!! Because it had a strong impact on me. THAT is what the blog should be about. What I have to give up on, is the vision of getting others to be engaged in a discussion, or if you perfer, and exploration of the issues involved.
Meanwhile, I am going to let Rick Reed, who is a friend on myspace, know that I did a review of his book, but since he is not a friend on 360, even he will probably not be commenting on this blog entry. Oh well, such is life..LOL
