This weekend was an active weekend...at least saturday was an active day. I did a lot but part of the day was set aside to do something I have not done in a long while. Ie, see a movie on the big screen. I had a vague idea of what I wanted to see, but ended up seeing Good Luck Chuck, with Dana Cook and Jessica Alba. I am so glad I did, and not just cuz I think Dana is a cutie, either. (grin)
I had read some reviews that painted it as a very shallow, pointless movie but I have often disagreed with the critics and this was no exception. Yes, it was a bit shallow. It was a modern love story with comedic overtones. It was bound to be influenced by the general attitude of our society, which tends to focus on appearance. However, it also told a story of a man afraid of committment and what he goes throught trying to overcome some difficult issues from the past, having to do with an early adolescent party, in order to be able to committ and have a chance at happiness. It is a feel good movie in that it ends well.
I recommend this movie, not for how terribly deep it is, but for how much fun it is. In addition it is nice to have a story in a movie end "happily ever after" occasionally.
The second movie I saw this weekend was on television; after all I can only afford one movie at a theater at the current rate of admission. :) It is probably a few years old and I had seen it once before, at least parts of it. The movie is called "Speak" and is about a teen age girl who called the police on a party she was at attendance at the previous year. The new school has come and none of her old friends will talk to her. In point of fact, she has trouble talking to anyone....about anything. Altought her friends have turned their back, and her parents are not available, she cant seem to talk even if someone were available.
The picture is of the book that inspired this movie, written by [aurie Halse Anderson is available throught Amazon. The first line of the book reads "...Home of the Trojans" didn't send a strong abstinence message, so they have transformed us into the Blue Devils". This "voice", which is full of teen agnst (incidentially while trying to find links to the movie, I came up with the book and with a Teen Sucide prevention group using the name "speak", not sure if that is a coindinance or not) and a certain humour continues throught the major part of the movie. The substance of the story is the unveiling of the REASON for the angst for Melinda. A must see, of if you cant find the movie to see it, get the book and read it.
