This week's book review is on a John Grisham book, The Summons. The story sounded interesting when I read the blurb. A southern judge is dying and summons his two sons home.

The book was well written and there was lots of suspense. Did the judge have a secret life? If he did, who knew about it? Who is trying to keep the protagonist? These are the questions you find yourself graffling with throught out the book. It is a good mystery and the characters are unique.

I enjoyed the book but was none-the-less, a bit disappointed. Based on the blurb, I had found an expectation of a southern novel, along the lines of a "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" or a "Glass Menagarie". Since it was set in the southern United States, I expected a sort of "southern sensativity" that never formed. But then the main character was visiting from Northern Virginia and this is Grisham, not Tennessee Williams, so I got what I probably should have expected. But I still read and enjoyed the book.

So, I certainly recommend the book for all of those that love mysteries with lots of intrique and twists and turns. Just dont go into it expecting a lot of observation, except of the very surface, about the southern character. For that look in Tennessee Williams.
