Blog EntryMovie Monday: The HousekeeperApr 7, '08 12:00 AM
for everyone

My movie review for this week is The Housekeeper (2002) starring Jean-Pierre Baci and Emilie Dequenne.  It is a french movie and was shown on a cable we have here that features independent films.  It is a bit dark, but it fit my mood today, and I found it vry interesting.

Jean-Pierre plays the role of a guy who has been dumped and is having a hard time getting back into the swing of life.  His apartment is a real mess so he hires a housekeeper to tidy things up.  The housekeeper is about 20 plus years younger than he is, but together they manage to re-awaken his interest in life.  And yes, they have an affair.

There were lots of times when I felt like I knew exactly what Jacques was feeling.  Once he is in a sidewalk cafe and tries to talk to the woman beside him, as he watches young couples go back in every direction.  Today I was in a restaurant and saw two guys holding hands, and felt an immediate pang of loneliness.

While there are problems with the relationship continueing between him and the housekeeper, at the end, I was left with the hope that little relationship was preparing him for another, more realistic and likely to last, relationship.  There is hope once again.

I recommend this movie for those who like independent films, it doesnt really have the "polish" of a hollywood movie but seems a lot more realistic.  The people all have "warts"...there are no glamourous people in this film..which makes them all the easier to identify with.

For those of you that are interested that dont find a ready copy either on cable or in a video store, here is a link to a resourse http://www.amazon.com/Housekeeper-Jean-Pierre-Bacri/dp/B0000CBXZA.

This sounds really interesting. Not all relationships need to last a long time to make an everlasting impact on a person. And one that brings life back into someone's heart, in these darkened ages of horror and slash with no plot, are far more pleasurable to watch. Loneliness is a very difficult thing to live with. People need people, and that need will take us where we need to go. Sounds like a super choice... I'll look about here for it.
